Roll up your sleeves and help PMHS prepare the shelter for the sunny season! We’ll tackle various tasks including, but not limited to, sprucing up flower beds, cleaning windows, scrubbing siding, repairing plowed gravel, and maintaining the walking trails. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a cleaning enthusiast, there’s something for everyone to contribute. Remember your work gloves and gardening tools, especially metal rakes, to help us tackle the projects efficiently. We will also have tools on hand for people to use!

Many hands make light work and even more fun! After a morning of making the shelter shine (inside and out), we’ll gather for a picnic-style lunch around noon. Feel free to bring your favorite dish to share and connect with fellow animal lovers over a tasty lunch. (Bringing a dish is entirely optional, but we will have a signup closer to the event)

  • This event is a fantastic opportunity to:
  • Give back to the community and help animals in need.
  • Bond with fellow animal lovers and make new friends.
  • Enjoy the beautiful Maine spring weather while working outdoors.
  • Contribute to the overall well-being of Pope Memorial Humane Society.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Save the date and mark your calendars for Saturday, May 18th. As the event approaches, we’ll share more details about specific tasks, volunteer needs, and lunch info. Stay tuned and prepare for a day filled with making a difference, having fun, and spreading the love for animals!

Thank you for considering supporting the animals of Pope Memorial Humane Society (PMHS)! Volunteers like you are invaluable to our mission, and we deeply appreciate your willingness to dedicate your time to helping homeless dogs, cats, and small animals.

Volunteers at PMHS play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of the animals in our care, ensuring they are clean, comfortable, and cared for. Whether it’s walking dogs, cleaning cat areas and small animal rooms, assisting at the front desk, or participating in events, there are numerous opportunities to make a positive impact. Most volunteers commit to just 1 ½ to two hours per week!

Interested in getting involved? Here’s how you can take the next steps:

Complete the Volunteer Application

  • Attend the Volunteer Orientation: Our monthly orientation sessions are held in the PMHS Community Room. During these sessions, you’ll learn about the history of Pope Memorial Humane Society, the animals we serve, and the various programs and resources available. The orientation concludes with a tour of the shelter.
  • Discuss Your Availability: Reach out to Jacqueline Harjula, our Volunteer Coordinator, to discuss your availability and interests in volunteering. Jacqueline can help match you with volunteer opportunities that align with your schedule and passions.

The next monthly volunteer orientation is scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2024, from 11 am to 12:30 pm in the Pope Memorial Humane Society Community Room.

If you have any questions, please contact Jacqueline (PMHS Volunteer Coordinator) at 207-594-2200 extension 104 or via email at volunteer@popehumane.org.

Your support is incredibly meaningful to us and to the animals who are waiting for a brighter future. Join our compassionate community today and become a force for good!

Losing a beloved pet can be an incredibly difficult and emotionally taxing experience. For many pet owners, their furry, feathered, or scaly companions are not just animals but cherished family members, making their passing akin to losing a close friend or family member. If you find yourself grappling with the profound grief and sense of loss that often accompanies the passing of a pet, you are not alone.

Please join us on March 16th at noon for a supportive virtual gathering designed specifically for individuals navigating the complex emotions of pet loss. Led by Patricia Lee Rode, MA, a compassionate and experienced pet grief counselor, this free support group offers a safe space for sharing, healing, and finding solace amidst the pain.

During the session, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Share their stories: Whether you’re mourning the loss of a loyal canine companion, a cherished feline friend, a beloved bird, or any other beloved pet, everyone’s grief journey is unique. This support group provides a non-judgmental environment where attendees can openly express their feelings, memories, and experiences without fear of criticism or misunderstanding.
  • Receive empathy and understanding: One of the most challenging aspects of grieving a pet is the lack of understanding from those who have never formed such deep bonds with animals. In this support group, participants will find validation and empathy from others who truly comprehend the depth of their sorrow and the significance of their loss.
  • Learn coping strategies: Patricia Lee Rode brings years of experience and expertise to the support group, offering practical guidance and coping strategies to help attendees navigate the grieving process. From self-care practices to memorializing rituals, participants will gain valuable insights and tools to cope with their grief and honor the memory of their beloved pets.

This virtual support group will be conducted via Zoom, allowing people from all over to join a supportive online community. To RSVP or request more information, please get in touch with Patricia at patricialeerodeone@gmail.com or leave a message at 207-594-2200.

Amidst the pain of pet loss, finding understanding, compassion, and support can make a significant difference in the healing journey. Join us on March 16th as we come together to honor the bond between humans and animals and navigate the path toward healing and hope.

Stop by PMHS and select a tag (or as many as you like) from the Pet Angel Tree. Everyone is welcome to participate! Each tag has a few items that will make each pet’s stay at PMHS that much more special and comfortable. Are you unable to get to the shelter to select a tag? That is ok! Email kasey@popehumane.org, and she will send you a tag or two!

Additionally, you’ll be able to find “satellite” Pet Angel Trees at Ruckus Donuts in Rockland AND Laurel’s Dolce Vita in Thomaston!

Wrapping gifts is highly encouraged! Cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies all LOVE to play in the paper and boxes (supervised, of course) on opening day!

*With any luck, many of the animals printed on tags will be adopted this holiday season. Any gifts bought for those animals will be passed along to their friends who are still waiting for homes!
